Product Overview

The Paxton Net2 Plus 682-493 is a professional single-door network access control unit designed for use as part of a Paxton Net2 access control system. Featuring onboard TCP/IP connectivity together with RS485 networking, the controller provides a flexible way to manage one controlled door while integrating with a central Net2 server and other compatible Paxton equipment.

Unlike a basic standalone door controller, Net2 Plus forms part of a centrally managed networked access control system. User permissions, time zones, access levels and system settings can be managed through Net2 software, while the individual control unit stores its own configuration and can continue making access decisions if communication with the server is temporarily interrupted.

This exact product is Paxton sales code 682-493 and is the Net2 Plus controller PCB. It should not be confused with separate versions supplied in plastic or metal cabinets, with 12V 2A power supplies or with PoE+ power supplies, as those configurations have their own Paxton sales codes.

One-Door Network Access Control

The Net2 Plus is designed to control one access-controlled door. A reader or keypad can be positioned on the entry side, while a second reader, keypad or request-to-exit arrangement can be used according to the required door configuration.

The controller receives credential information from connected readers, compares the credential against its stored access-control database and then permits or denies entry according to the user's configured permissions.

The system can control a compatible electric locking device through its volt-free relay. Door contacts, exit buttons, tamper monitoring and alarm equipment can also be connected to provide a more complete access-control installation.

Built-In TCP/IP Networking

A major advantage of Net2 Plus over earlier network-controller designs is its integrated TCP/IP interface. The controller can connect directly to a standard Ethernet network using an RJ45 connection without requiring a separate TCP/IP converter for each networked controller.

Paxton specifies an Ethernet network speed of 100Mbit/s with Auto-MDIX and an approximate Ethernet bandwidth requirement of 200Kbit/s.

DHCP is supported, although Paxton recommends using a fixed IP address for the controller. Configuration and detection are managed through the appropriate Net2 configuration utilities.

TCP/IP and RS485 in the Same System

Net2 Plus also includes RS485 communication, allowing controllers to be connected through a dedicated RS485 data line.

A particularly useful feature is that one Net2 Plus controller connected to the LAN can also act as the TCP/IP interface for an RS485 chain containing additional Net2 Plus or Net2 Classic control units. This can reduce the number of Ethernet network points required on larger installations.

Paxton states that different Net2 controller types can be mixed within a suitable site design, allowing installers greater flexibility when extending existing systems.

Independent Operation During Network Failure

Although Net2 is centrally managed, each Net2 Plus controller stores its own access-control information and can continue operating if communication with the central Net2 computer is temporarily lost.

The controller continues to permit or deny users according to its stored permissions. Once communications are restored, stored activity can be reported back to the Net2 server.

This decentralised design helps prevent a temporary server or network communication problem from automatically stopping normal controlled-door operation.

Up to 50,000 Users and Tokens

Each Net2 Plus controller supports a maximum of 50,000 users or tokens, providing substantial capacity for everything from smaller businesses to larger commercial, education and multi-building access-control installations.

User access is controlled according to centrally configured permissions such as access levels and time zones.

250 Access Levels and 64 Time Zones

The controller supports up to 250 access levels and 64 time zones.

These functions allow administrators to define which users may access specific controlled areas and during which periods. For example, employees can be restricted to normal working hours while managers, security personnel or contractors receive different access permissions.

More Than 2,500 Stored Events

The Net2 Plus can store more than 2,500 access-control events locally.

This local event storage is particularly useful if communication with the Net2 server is interrupted. The controller can continue making decisions and retain activity for later reporting when communication is re-established.

Paxton specifies data retention of approximately 30 days during a total power loss.

Two Reader Ports

The Net2 Plus provides two reader ports. Paxton specifies support for up to four readers or keypads per access control unit, subject to the total electrical requirements of the connected devices.

Total reader-port output current is rated at 500mA, so the combined current requirements of all connected readers and keypads must be checked during system design.

Paxton and Third-Party Reader Support

The controller is designed to work with Paxton readers and also supports compatible third-party access-control readers.

Supported reader communication includes Clock and Data, standard 26-bit Wiegand and compatible custom Wiegand formats up to 50 bits.

Compatibility with a particular third-party reader should always be confirmed before installation rather than assuming every Wiegand or access-control reader will operate identically.

Volt-Free Lock Relay

The controller incorporates a volt-free control relay for operating a compatible electric lock or other suitable electrical device.

Paxton specifies a maximum relay switching voltage of 24V DC and a maximum switching current of 4A.

Because the relay is volt-free, the locking device's power arrangement can be designed separately within the controller's electrical limits. Correct lock power, suppression and wiring remain important for reliable operation.

Adjustable Door Open Time

Door-open time can be configured from approximately 1 second up to 5,000 seconds, giving installers flexibility for different door types and operating requirements.

Shorter release periods may suit standard office doors, while particular accessibility or operational requirements may require longer release periods.

Exit Button and Door Contact Inputs

A dedicated exit-button input allows a request-to-exit device to be connected so users can release the controlled door from the secure side where required.

A door-contact input can also be connected, enabling the access-control system to monitor the physical state of the door.

Correctly configured door monitoring can help identify conditions such as a door remaining open or other relevant access-control events.

PSU Failure and Tamper Monitoring

The Net2 Plus provides dedicated inputs for power-supply failure and enclosure tamper monitoring.

When the controller is installed in a suitable Paxton power-supply enclosure with appropriate battery backup and monitoring connections, system events can be generated if the enclosure is opened or mains power fails.

This listing is for the 682-493 controller PCB itself, so a monitored enclosure and PSU should only be described as included when they are actually part of the product configuration being sold.

Intruder Alarm Integration

A dedicated intruder-alarm connection is provided, allowing Net2 Plus to form part of an appropriately designed integration between access control and a compatible intruder-alarm system.

Integration functionality depends on correct system design, wiring, programming and compatibility with the connected alarm equipment.

FLASH Memory for Updates

Net2 Plus uses FLASH memory, allowing firmware to be updated as supported by Paxton. This helps the controller adapt to software development and supported system improvements without requiring replacement of the physical control unit for routine firmware upgrades.

12V or 24V DC Operation

The bare Net2 Plus controller supports an operating input of 12V DC ±20% or 24V DC ±20%.

Paxton specifies controller current consumption of approximately 200mA at 12V DC.

The power supply must also be sized for any connected readers, locking equipment and auxiliary devices. The PCB's operating-current specification is therefore not the same as the total power requirement of the complete access-control installation.

Indoor Controller PCB

The 682-493 product is an electronic access-control PCB and does not provide environmental weather protection by itself.

Paxton states that if the control unit is used in an exposed location it must be installed within a suitable weatherproof housing. The controller is therefore normally installed indoors or inside an appropriate protected enclosure.

Its specified operating-temperature range is 0°C to +55°C.
